Every year, on May the 4th,
Star Wars fans across the galaxy
unite to celebrate the
most legendary sci-fi
franchise of all time.
But how did this unofficial
holiday come to be?
Was it a Jedi prophecy,
a marketing stunt, or just a
clever play on words?
The answer, like the Force itself,
is a little bit of everything…
The Birth of a Galactic Catchphrase
It all started with one simple line: “May the Force be with you.” First spoken by General Dodonna in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), the phrase became a cornerstone of Jedi wisdom, a way to wish someone luck before heading into battle. Over the years, it was repeated by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Luke Skywalker, and countless others, cementing itself as one of the most iconic lines in cinematic history.
Then came the wordplay. The earliest known use of “May the 4th be with you” dates back to May 4, 1979, when Margaret Thatcher was elected as the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister. To celebrate, her political party took out an ad in The London Evening News that read:
“May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!”
That’s right—before it was a Star Wars holiday, it was a political pun. But the phrase stuck, and over the years, fans began using it as a way to celebrate their love for the saga.
From Fan Joke to Global Celebration
For decades, May the 4th remained a fan-driven phenomenon, popping up in newspaper headlines, online forums, and geek culture circles. But it wasn’t until Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 that the day became an official Star Wars celebration.
Since then, May the 4th has evolved into a global event, with:
🚀 Movie marathons – Fans binge-watch the entire saga, from A New Hope to The Mandalorian.
🎭 Cosplay gatherings – Jedi, Sith, and bounty hunters take to the streets in full costume.
🛍️ Exclusive merchandise drops – Limited-edition collectibles, toys, and apparel flood the market.
🎮 Video game events – Special Star Wars-themed updates in games like Fortnite and LEGO Star Wars.
Even major brands and sports teams get in on the action, with Star Wars-themed promotions, jerseys, and events.
The Force Is Strong With This Holiday
What started as a simple pun has become a cultural phenomenon, proving that Star Wars isn’t just a movie—it’s a way of life. Whether you’re a die-hard collector, a casual fan, or just someone who loves a good sci-fi adventure, May the 4th is the perfect excuse to celebrate the galaxy far, far away.
